Local Attractions
Although StoneRidge provides a full calendar of planned social, cultural and recreational activities, what you do each day is completely up to you.
When you’re in the mood to go exploring, you can take in the charming storefronts, tree-lined streets and the irresistible scent of the sea that make Stonington and Mystic such compelling destinations. Not surprisingly, Stonington is a favorite place for artists. The Velvet Mill is home to what has been called “a thriving community of artists and artisans.” The Stonington Borough Merchants Association is an excellent resource for information on garden tours, lectures, gallery shows and other events. Many of these can be found at www.stoningtonboroughct.com.
Also in Stonington, one of the “must sees” is the Old Lighthouse Museum, where the view from the tower has been aptly described as “breathtaking.” Collections in the museum reveal the maritime heritage that is evident throughout the Stonington/Mystic
area. Although most of the historic buildings are Colonial or Federal style, Stonington’s new brick firehouse happens to be modern architect Philip Johnson’s last design.
Mystic.org is a great source of information on what’s happening in Mystic from “Where to Eat” to “Where to Shop” and “Where to Stay.” The site also provides a list of events from Tall Ships to an Annual Author Series to special historical exhibits, there is much to do and see. Restaurants are available in abundance so it’s best to do some decision-making beforehand.
